GPAN PROJECT (Gestión participativa en Areas Naturales)
Participatory Management in Natural Areas

The Salinas Aguada Blanca Reserve, located in Arequipa, Peru, is one of Peru's largest protected areas.  At 365,00 Hectares in size, the Reserve serves as habitat for a variety of flora and fauna adapted to live in the mountain puna habitat. The reserve is also home to people that live in 13 Andean communities.

In 1999 Conatura, along with other organizations and the park authority, INRENA, worked to create a Master Plan for the Reserve that would include conservation and local needs.

In 2003, a project funded by the World Bank, "Gestión Participativa en Areas Protegidas" (Participatory management in Protected Areas) assisted in the organization of a participatory management committee that includes local people as well as natural resource experts.  The effort has thus far been a success, and implementation of a management plan based on three years of consensus building is scheduled for this year.  Conatura has actively participated in workshops and activities necessary for this effort to succeed.  The data collected in our studies will be a valuable tool as the implementation phase nears.
