Donor Agency:  United Nations Development Project Small Grants Program
Start Date:  March 2006

Conatura is currently working with Andean communities within the Salinas Aguada Blanca Reserve to develop a tourism program that will benefit both conservation and the livelihoods of Andean people living within the reserve.  Currently the Reserve receives thousands of visitors per year, yet no tourism dollars go to park management, local communities or conservation programs.  Conatura will work with local people and authorities as partners in designing a tour package sensitive to cultural and environmental components of this Andean landscape.  Because we have years of experience working in the area and excellent relationships with community members, our goal is to give visitors opportunities to interact with community members directly and learn from them about wildlife and their relationship to nature.

The Salinas Aguada Blanca Reserve is located near the beautiful and traditional city of Arequipa, Peru.  Access to the park is relatively easy, due to completion of a paved highway.  The park boundary is only about one and one half hours from the city of Arequipa.  Visitors can make day or overnight trips, visit the Colca Canyon (the second deepest canyon in the world, and home to condors, spectacular vistas, and the Cabana and Colla cultures).  We are working to make the visit to the Salinas Aguada Blanca Reserve an intimate and varied experience that will enhance visitors understanding of the Peruvian Andes by focusing on its wildlife and people.  All activities are being coordinated with local people and the Park Authority.
