Capacity Building in Andean Communities:

Facilitating conservation through organization and collaboration

Conatura completed a capacity-building program in 2005 designed to strengthen community vicuña management committees and their regional association, ACVIRA (Asociación de Criadores de Vicuña-Arequipa/regional chapter of the National Vicuña Society) Our key strategy in this program is utilizing "participatory management", which entails working with local people as partners.    While we impart knowledge on needed technical and entrepreneurial skills, we also learn from communities and develop our workshops and materials in line with their observations and needs. The areas of focus we addressed were:

•  Developing protocols for monitoring vicuñas and pasture biomass that local communities can use

•   Improving vicuña capture and shearing techniques through field workshops and exchanges between Andean communities.

•    Training in basic entrepreneurial skills such as computerized bookkeeping   and business planning; adding value to vicuña fleece through workshops given by industry experts in fleece cleaning and preparation for sale to textile factories.

In addition  to assisting at a regional level, Conatura provides technical advice to the Sociedad Nacional de la Vicuña (www.vicugna.org.pe), or National Vicuña Society, the organization which represents over 700 campesino communities that have usufruct rights to live-shear vicuñas.
